Compromised Debit Cards

It seems like every day there is a new headline about a security breach that affects millions of consumers, and with new scams emerging like phishing, smishing, vishing, skimmers, card cracking- it’s enough to make your head spin. As your trusted financial institution, we want to make sure you understand these security risks and how we partner with you to help prevent fraudulent activity.  In this article, we will focus our attention on compromised debit cards.

You may have heard about or experienced a debit card compromise but what exactly is it and what does it mean? A compromised debit card number is a card that is at risk of being used fraudulently due to computer theft, unauthorized network intrusion, or other types of suspicious activity which results in your card number and payment information being shared electronically with criminals.

Here at NebraskaLand National Bank, we take every compromise seriously. Although, a compromised debit card does not necessarily mean that you have fraud on your account, the stolen card number could be utilized by a criminal months or even years into the future. That’s why we immediately contact our cardholders and close the compromised cards. We then reissue a new debit card upon request and you are able to pick up your instant issued debit card at your local branch when it is convenient for you. If you do not need your debit card immediately, we are happy to mail it to you. Once you have your new debit card, destroy the compromised card immediately and don’t forget to update any automatic payments with your new card number.

Unfortunately, we have no way of stopping criminals from “hacking” into databases of merchants or merchant processors. Here are a few ways you can reduce your risk of fraud:

  • Avoid using your debit card for online transactions on unsecure sites
  • Beware of card skimmers (devices attached to a payment terminal that are temporary and can easily be removed)
  • Ensure that we have your updated contact information so we can reach you in the event that we find suspicious activity on your account
  • Monitor your account activity closely and immediately report any suspicious or unknown transactions
  • Enroll in services that make monitoring your accounts easy like My Mobile App, Account Alerts, and Online Banking
